As luck would have it, 25 years ago a wrong turn down a hallway landed Canadian Glass Artisan Sarah Mulligan in the School of Craft and Design building at Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario. That day she discovered the hot glass studio and promptly entered the program and has ever since been working with hot glass. Sarah’s body of work is a combination of blown glass vessels and fused glass jewelry. All her work maintains an affinity for minimalist design, attention to detail and a commitment to craftsmanship. She now resides and works in beautiful Victoria, British Columbia.
I design and create all my blown glass in the age old tradition of a blow pipe drawing molten glass from a furnace. Shaping and creating forms with metal tables, hand tools, gravity and sweat. Often my work embodies nods to the natural world, wether it be images of wildlife, trees or incorporating natural items into the glass itself. Function is a large aspect of my body of work, from drinking vessels, bowls to vases and urns. Hours are spent working on the vessels after the hot process. Cutting, grinding, polishing the glass to its finished forms, as well as working with the firing of waterslide decals as surface decoration on the cold glass. Prices range from under $50 for drinking cups, bowls in the $200 range, and upwards of $600 for larger one of a kind vessels.
