The Filberg Festival Celebrates 30 Years!
Comox, B.C., Come join us this BC Day Long Weekend August 3-6, 2012 and celebrate 30 years of arts, crafts, food, music and fun! The Filberg Festival continues to enjoy its world-wide reputation and today is one of western Canada’s longest running and largest juried outdoor arts shows.
The 2012 Festival will showcase over 120 artisans and makers of fine art in a variety of media ranging from metalwork, pottery, toys, woodcrafts, jewellery, paintings, glass, textiles and specialty foods. http://filbergfest.wpengine.com/artisans/artisans-current/.
This year’s Guest Artist is Mary Fox, known for creating beautiful vessels to enrich or inspire. Her focus is on expressing the beauty and strength of pure form. She delights in the challenge of creating contemporary vessels based on classic lines and has a keen interest in developing original glaze effects in her works www.maryfoxpottery.ca. In the past guest artists have displayed their work in the Lodge during the Festival, however this year patrons will be able to visit Mary’s exhibit in an outdoor location in the Park. The Lodge will be open for tours during the Festival as part of the 30th Anniversary Celebration.
The Filberg Festival is also known for great entertainment and this year’s line up is sure not to disappoint; kicking off the Festival on Friday are Canada’s favourite folk rockers, Spirit of the West. This year’s Blues Panel Concert features David Gogo, Dave Harris, David Vest, and Gary Preston & Anita Bonkowski, and singer songwriter Roy Forbes, will follow. On Saturday The High Bar Gang featuring Barney Bentall, Shari Ulrich, Wendy Bird and Angela Harris will open the day with classic bluegrass for modern times. Juno Award winner Ian Tamblynwill also make an appearance. Also playing will be songstress Babe Gurr, JUNO award winner Gary Fjellgaard, and jazz guitarist/vocalist Flora Scott. On Sunday the critically acclaimed sounds of John Reischman and the Jaybirds will start things off, followed by country roots group PEAR, and more appearances by Babe Gurr, and the Flora Scott Trio. Celtic songstress Mary Murphy will end the day with her traditional, original and contemporary tunes. Monday is Jazz day, featuring Filberg Festival favourite Michael Kaeshammer playing boogie woogie and jazz piano, and JUNO award winner Phil Dwyer with his Songbook Project and finally the traditional closing to the Filberg Festival, the Great Canadian Songs Concert.
Raffle tickets will be available for purchase July 1 thru August 6 at the Filberg Lodge Gift Shop, on line at www.filbergfestival.com and also during the Festival. A $10.00 ticket gives you the opportunity to win original paintings by artists Coral Barclay and MONK, a gorgeous handmade quilt by the Comox Valley Schoolhouse Quilters Guild, a pearl necklace from Graham’s Jewellers, pottery by Guest Artist Mary Fox and two return tickets anywhere WestJet flies. Net proceeds benefit the Filberg Heritage Lodge and Park.
Gate admission is charged at the Filberg Festival, as it is the primary fundraiser for the not-for-profit organization which has the responsibility of repairing and maintaining the Filberg Heritage Lodge and Park’s property and buildings www.filberg.com. Advance tickets are online at www.filbergfestival.com, the new Vancouver Island Visitor’s Centre and Arizona Gifts in the Comox Mall as of June 1st and at all Vancouver Island Thrifty Foods locations as of June 15th.
